iPhone Duo Camera: What's New and How It Compares to iPhone 18 Pro

iPhone Duo launches October 23, 2026. Pre-orders open Friday, October 16.

Let's get the honest part out of the way first: on pure camera hardware, iPhone Duo does not out-shoot iPhone 18 Pro. Apple made deliberate trade-offs to build its first foldable — and then used the folding shape to add camera tricks no slab iPhone can do. Here's the full picture.

Quick Answer: iPhone Duo has two rear cameras — a 48MP Fusion Main (fixed f/1.6) and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide — with 2x optical-quality crop zoom, no telephoto lens, and no ProRes. iPhone 18 Pro keeps the stronger stills/video system (triple-48MP, variable aperture). What the Duo adds instead: Duo Preview, Smart Take, rear-camera selfies, and tent-mode shooting.

Main Camera: 48MP, Fixed f/1.6

Both phones shoot through a 48MP main sensor — but they get there differently. iPhone 18 Pro pairs its 48MP main with a variable aperture (f/1.48–f/4.0), so you can open up for low light or stop down for depth of field. The Duo's main lens is a fixed f/1.6. It's a capable, fast lens — it's just not adjustable, and there's no second act behind it.

Telephoto: The Duo Doesn't Have One

This is the biggest single gap. iPhone 18 Pro has a dedicated telephoto lens. iPhone Duo has no telephoto at all — zoom is a 2x optical-quality crop from the main sensor, with digital zoom beyond that (to 10x). If you shoot concerts, sports, or wildlife, the 18 Pro is the camera phone. The Duo asks you to walk closer.

Ultra-Wide: Even at 48MP

One place the Duo doesn't give anything back: the ultra-wide is a 48MP Fusion unit, matching the 18 Pro's 48MP ultra-wide. Landscapes and interiors are not where the trade-off lives.

Video: 4K120 Dolby Vision — and No ProRes

The Duo tops out at 4K120 Dolby Vision, which is genuinely strong for everyday video and slow motion. But there is no ProRes and no ProRAW on the Duo, and no Pro Controls. Cinematic effects can be applied after capture (up to 60fps). If your workflow is built on ProRes, the 18 Pro remains Apple's video phone.

What the Fold Gives Back

The Duo's camera story isn't the spec sheet — it's the shape:

  • Duo Preview: your subject sees themselves on the outer display while you shoot them with the better rear cameras.

  • Smart Take: on-device AI watches a posed shot and captures the best moment for you.

  • Rear-camera selfies: prop the phone half-open, frame yourself on the outer display, and shoot with the 48MP main instead of a front camera.

  • Dual Capture in FaceTime: show your face and what you're looking at at the same time.

  • Tent mode: fold it halfway and it stands on its own — a tripod you always have with you.

  • Front cameras: a 12MP Center Stage camera, plus an under-display FaceTime camera in the inner screen.
