How to Set Up AirPods 5 With Your iPhone 18 Pro

Live Translation and Siri AI features require iOS 27. Head gestures don't — they're built into the H2 chip and work out of the box.

Quick Answer: Pairing takes under 2 minutes. After that, the real setup is short: set Adaptive Audio on the AirPods settings page, turn on Live Translation if you want it, and check your Siri options. Head gestures (nod for yes, shake for no) need no setup at all — and there's no fit test to run, because AirPods 5 are open-ear with no ear tips.

New to AirPods 5? Our AirPods 5 review covers whether the open-ear ANC is worth it — this guide picks up once they're in your ears.

Step 1: Pair AirPods 5

Open the case near your unlocked iPhone 18 Pro. Tap Connect on the pairing card. Done in under 2 minutes.

Step 2: Configure ANC Mode

With your AirPods 5 connected, open the AirPods settings page on your iPhone and look for the Noise Control options. Set them to Adaptive Audio for automatic switching between noise cancelling and hearing what's around you.

Step 3: Set Up Live Translation

On the AirPods settings page, look for Live Translation, switch it on, and choose your language pair — then follow the on-screen prompts to finish. Live Translation needs iOS 27 with Apple Intelligence enabled.

Step 4: Head Gestures — Nothing to Set Up

Skip any guide that tells you to calibrate this. AirPods 5 use Siri Interactions: when Siri asks a yes-or-no question, nod for yes, shake your head for no. It works for answering or declining calls, too. The gestures are built into the H2 chip, they're on by default, and there is no assignment screen and no calibration — they simply work.

Step 5: Get the Fit Right

There's no fit check to run — AirPods 5 are open-ear and have no ear tips to seal, so there's nothing to test. What does matter is positioning: seat each bud in your outer ear and adjust the angle until the sound is fullest and the noise cancelling feels even on both sides. If one side sounds thin, reseat that bud slightly. With an open-ear design, small position changes are the whole game.

Step 6: Configure Siri

In your iPhone's Siri settings, make sure listening for "Hey Siri" is turned on. Then check the AirPods settings page for Siri options, including notification announcements, and set them the way you like.

AK NextG TriCharge Pro foldable 3-in-1 magnetic wireless charger in silver

Charging

Wireless charging depends on which AirPods 5 you bought. If you have the $149 Wireless Charging Case model, the AK NextG TriCharge Pro charges your AirPods 5 wirelessly alongside iPhone 18 Pro and Apple Watch — $39.99. The $129 base case is USB-C only, with no wireless charging — if that's your model, plug it in (a desk hub like the PowerDesk 6-in-1 keeps a USB-C port free for exactly that).
