AirPods Pro 3 Won't Charge — 6 Things to Check

Your AirPods Pro 3 won't charge — and the case light either isn't coming on or the battery percentage in the control center is stuck. Before you call Apple support, work through these six checks. Most of them take under two minutes.

1. The Case Battery May Be Completely Dead

If the case itself is fully drained, it can take 15–30 minutes on a wired charger before showing any sign of life. The amber light won't blink — it just sits there looking dead. Fix: Plug the case in with a Lightning or USB-C cable (depending on your AirPods Pro 3 model) and wait 20 minutes before checking again. Don't use wireless for a fully dead case — start with wired.

2. The MagSafe Charging Contacts Are Dirty

Lint, sweat residue, and pocket debris can build up on the magnetic charging contacts on the bottom of the case. Even a thin film breaks the connection. Fix: Use a dry toothbrush or a lint-free cloth to clean the bottom of the case around the charging port and the MagSafe contact ring. Don't use liquid. Check for any visible debris in the Lightning or USB-C port.

3. MagSafe Alignment Is Off

AirPods Pro 3 cases charge wirelessly via MagSafe, which requires precise magnetic alignment. A millimeter off and the magnets engage but the charge doesn't transfer. Fix: Place the case on the center of the MagSafe pad and listen for the charging chime — or check the lock screen for the charging animation. If it's not chiming, try rotating the case 90 degrees on the pad.

4. Reset the AirPods Pairing

A pairing corruption between the AirPods and iPhone can sometimes prevent the case from reporting charge state correctly — which can look like a charging failure. Fix: Open the lid of the case near your iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the i next to your AirPods Pro 3, tap Forget This Device. Then hold the button on the back of the case until the light flashes white, and re-pair.

5. The Firmware May Need Updating

AirPods Pro firmware updates happen automatically, but only when the case is charging and connected to your iPhone. A stale firmware version can cause charging detection bugs. Fix: Place the AirPods in the case, plug the case into power, leave it near your iPhone for 30 minutes. To check firmware: Settings > Bluetooth > tap i next to AirPods > scroll to About. The firmware version should be current for the iOS version you're running.

6. Hardware Fault

If none of the above resolves it, the case charging circuit may have failed. This is rare but happens — particularly if the case took a drop or got wet. Fix: Check Apple's coverage.
