iPhone Duo Charging Guide: Wattage, MagSafe, and What Carries Over

5 min read

iPhone Duo launched October 23, 2026. This guide covers charging only — wattage, adapters, and what carries over from the setup you already own.

Charging is where a foldable stops being a normal iPhone. The Duo runs a dual battery, folds down to an 11.3 mm body, and asks its magnets to do a job they never did on a slab phone — so the questions Duo owners actually ask are different: How fast is wireless, really? Does the adapter behind the pad matter? Does it charge the same closed as open? We covered the phone itself in iPhone Duo: Every New Feature You Need to Know and its camera in How to Shoot and Edit With the iPhone Duo Camera. This is the charging companion to both.

Quick Answer: iPhone Duo charges over MagSafe and Qi2 at up to 25W wireless — up to 50% in around 30 minutes with a 35W-or-higher adapter — and up to 50% in around 20 minutes wired with a 60W-or-higher USB-C adapter. Your existing MagSafe and Qi2 chargers carry over at full speed; the adapter behind them is what decides whether you actually get it.

AK NextG TriCharge Pro — $39.99

Pros

  • Same 25W wireless ceiling as iPhone 18 Pro — no foldable penalty on wattage

  • Existing MagSafe and Qi2 chargers, stands, and pads carry over at full speed

  • Wired is faster still: up to 50% in around 20 minutes

Cons

  • Full speed is adapter-dependent: 35W or higher for wireless, 60W or higher for wired — a weaker brick quietly slows you down

  • Apple tested fast charging with the phone open; closed-charging speed parity is not yet confirmed

  • At 11.3 mm folded, some magnetic accessories made for thin slab phones sit proud

The verdict: If your current MagSafe or Qi2 pad already sits on a 35W-or-higher adapter, you already own full-speed Duo charging — spend nothing. If the adapter is the weak link, fix that first. And if you want one pad that charges the Duo, your Watch, and your AirPods together at full speed, that's the AK NextG TriCharge Pro at $39.99.

How iPhone Duo Charges — Wired and Wireless

Two ways in. Wireless is MagSafe and Qi2 at up to 25W, with Apple's full magnet array plus an alignment magnet, so the phone snaps to the same spot on the pad every time. Wired is USB-C, and it's the faster of the two: up to 50% in around 20 minutes with the right adapter.

Underneath, one system does the work: a dual battery — two cells managed as a single unit. That's how the Duo posts up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display, 31 hours on the inner display, and 24 hours in mixed use. For charging, what matters is simpler: whichever route you take, you're filling one battery system, and the speeds above are Apple's confirmed figures for it.

The Adapter Math (35W+ Wireless / 60W+ Wired)

The wattage on the phone is only half the equation. The other half is the adapter behind your charger — and that's where most slow charging actually comes from.

Adapter the speed assumes

Confirmed result

Wireless (MagSafe / Qi2)

35W or higher

Up to 50% in around 30 minutes

Wired (USB-C)

60W or higher

Up to 50% in around 20 minutes

Either, on a weaker adapter

Below those figures

Charges — just slower

A stronger adapter than the figure shown is fine; the phone takes what it needs. A weaker one doesn't damage anything — it quietly caps your speed below the headline numbers. So before you replace a charger that seems slow, check the brick behind it. On most desks, the adapter is the bottleneck, not the pad.

Open or Closed? The Foldable Charging Question

Here's the honest gap in the spec sheet: Apple's own fast-charge testing was done with the phone open. Whether a closed Duo on a pad matches the open phone's up-to-50%-in-around-30 minutes figure is a genuine open question — Apple doesn't break the number out by position, and independent launch testing hasn't settled it yet.

What is settled: charging works in both positions. A folded Duo sits on a pad and charges like any other phone — just a thicker one. The only unknown is speed parity, and when independent open-vs-closed charge tests land, we'll update this guide with the numbers. That's a standing refresh trigger on this post, not a footnote.

The Alignment Question on a Folding Body

Folded, the Duo is 11.3 mm thick — noticeably thicker than the slab iPhone you're coming from. Two things follow. First, the good news: the Duo carries Apple's full MagSafe magnet array plus an alignment magnet, so magnetic chargers snap on and self-center the way you're used to. Alignment is what decides whether you actually get 25W or a fraction of it — and it carries over intact.

Second, the fit question: a thicker folded body changes how some magnetic accessories sit. Wallets, grips, and car mounts designed around a thin slab phone can sit proud or rock slightly, and wider-body magnetic accessories made for foldables are already appearing. Cases are their own category — your current iPhone case won't fit a folding body at all. Apple's own Duo Case ($79) and Duo Folio with Kickstand ($129) are both MagSafe and Qi2 25W compatible, so a case doesn't have to cost you charging speed.

What Carries Over From Your Current Setup

The short version: almost everything that matters.

  • MagSafe chargers and stands — carry over at the full 25W

  • Qi2 chargers — carry over; Qi2 is the same magnetic standard the Duo charges on, up to 25W

  • USB-C adapters — carry over, with the math above: 35W or higher for full wireless speed, 60W or higher for full wired speed

  • USB-C cables — carry over for wired charging

  • MagSafe accessories (wallets, grips, mounts) — the magnets carry over; check the fit against the thicker folded body

  • Your old iPhone case — the one real casualty. A folding body needs a Duo case

Keep iPhone Duo Charged

The AK NextG TriCharge Pro delivers iPhone Duo's full 25W Qi2.2 wireless speed — up to 50% in around 30 minutes — plus Apple Watch and AirPods at the same time. $39.99.

One pad on the nightstand covers the whole carry: Duo on the phone pad, Watch on the puck, AirPods on the base — and because the TriCharge Pro speaks Qi2.2, the Duo gets its full wireless speed, not a throttled version of it.
