Apple Watch Ultra 4 Review: Built for Athletes, But Is It Worth $799?

Quick Answer - Ultra 4 shares the same S11 chip and Health Sensing System as Series 12 — health tracking is identical - The $799 premium buys 45-hour battery, dual-frequency GPS, and satellite communications - Worth it for serious athletes and outdoor adventurers — overkill for everyone else

Here's the honest question about Apple Watch Ultra 4: what are you actually paying $800 for?

What's the Same as Series 12

• S11 chip — identical

• Health Sensing System — same sensor accuracy

• Readiness Score — same algorithm

• Audio Intelligence — same on-device AI

• Siri AI on watchOS 27 — same capabilities

What the Ultra 4 Adds

45-Hour Battery

Ultra 4 runs for up to 45 hours in workout mode. Series 12 gives you ~18–20 hours. For people who sleep with their Watch and work out hard daily, the Ultra 4 battery means the Watch never dies between Day 1 morning and Day 2 bedtime.

Dual-Frequency GPS (L1 + L5)

Ultra 4 uses dual-frequency GPS — the same approach used by dedicated sports GPS devices. For trail races, mountain runs, and technical outdoor routes, this is real precision. Series 12 standard GPS works well in open conditions.

Satellite Communications

Ultra 4 can send SOS messages and location data via satellite when there's no cellular coverage. Series 12 has no satellite capability.

Who Should Actually Buy the Ultra 4

Buy Ultra 4 if: You trail run, do triathlons, or mountain climb. You need 45-hour battery. You spend time in remote areas.

Buy Series 12 instead if: Gym-based workouts. Charge nightly anyway. The $500+ premium is hard to justify.

Charge the Full Setup

The AK NextG TriCharge Pro handles Ultra 4's magnetic fast charging alongside iPhone 18 Pro at Qi2.2 25W and AirPods 5 — $39.99.
